Winter Reading

Winter Reading: Books Like Us  January 1 - 31

Join our Winter Reading Challenge! Books Like Us is a celebration of diversity, harnessing the transformative power of seeing oneself reflected in a book. We challenge you to read at least 600 minutes (that is less than 20 minutes a day!) during the month. Participants who complete the Challenge will be entered in a drawing to win a $25 Main Street Books gift card.
This Challenge is open to all ages. As a special bonus for Pre-K through 5th-grade participants, just for signing up for Winter Reading, they will receive coupons for free treats from our sponsors Freddy's and Chick-fil-A! (While supplies last.)

The Winter Reading Challenge is Sponsored by Simon & Schuster.

Building Block Award - Now through January 8

Please note: This Challenge will only show up under Beanstack accounts for ages 0-6.

The Missouri Library Association’s Building Block Book Award has been transformed into a Beanstack Challenge! In past years, the Library has promoted this book award and asked parents and kids to attend our storytimes or read the books themselves. When children listened to five out of the ten books, they voted for their favorite. This year you and your child can participate by reading the books yourself or listening to your favorite library staff member read Building Block Award nominees through Beanstack! Just like years past, everyone who votes will be entered to win a copy of one of the nominees!

Read Woke - Now through February 28

Cicely Lewis, School Library Journal's School Librarian of the Year for 2020, created the “Read Woke Challenge” to prompt her young readers to embrace diversity and social consciousness and her students say she changed their lives. This Beanstack Challenge expands beyond just young readers and promotes reading diverse titles to all ages! Anyone who earns five activity badges (and/or 20 points)  will be entered to win a Target gift card. If you complete the entire challenge (all ten activity badges) you will be entered a second time.

One Read - Now through December 31

We are pleased to partner with area schools to offer the One Read reading challenge featuring The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women - a true account by Kate Moore. Students and readers of all ages are invited to take part in this shared community reading experience. Participate in our One Read Challenge for a chance to win a $20 gift card. Complete the challenges to get additional entries.

Mindfulness - Now through December 31

During this stressful year, we hope that all ages will enjoy earning the activity badges in our Mindfulness Challenge. Doing small things like finding a peaceful spot in your home to take a break, drawing your feelings of stress or anxiety, and checking out a book on mindfulness from the library, will help you complete this challenge by finishing seven out of eight activities. Anyone who completes this challenge will be entered to win a Target gift card!
